At Domaine Zind Humbrecht, the Hengst is only made from the Gewurztraminer grape variety, for the moment! A plot located on the east facing slope, and never claimed as Hengst for the moment, will be planted with Riesling in 2014. This terroir, in any case the central part of the Hengst exposed to the south, undoubtedly predisposes the Gewurztraminer to a great longevity. Each vintage, whatever it is, needs many years before reaching maturity, and can therefore claim to age for several decades without losing its presence.
The race of the terroir is mainly expressed by the capacity of this Cru to produce very powerful wines, quite high in alcohol, with a high level of maturity but where noble rot is rare (except in vintages with sufficient heat and humidity). The aromas are often discreet, even closed on the nose, the Hengst develops mainly spicy and smoky notes that become more complex with age

1: technically dry or tasting dry. 2: not technically dry, but sugars are not noticeable on the palate. Some tasters may find a slight roundness in the finish. These wines will taste dry with some bottle ageing.3: medium sweetness, more important in the youth of the wine, which will gradually fade with age. 4: Sweet wine. 5: Sweet wine, very close to a Late Harvest
