Pinot Gris - Clos Windsbuhl 2018 - Zind-Humbrecht
Hunawihr - Domaine Zind-Humbecht
95/100 James Suckling
Tasting in 2020: “Powerful and firmly structured, this imposing dry Riesling is still very closed, showing just hints of ripe orange, kafir lime and lemon balm. The concentrated palate is incredibly concentrated and the very long finish is fresh, dark and mysterious. Made from biodynamically grown grapes. Best after 2021.”

The altitude of the vineyard, combined with the later climate of Hunawihr, means that Clos Windsbuhl is often one of the last vines harvested on the Domaine. For the same grape variety, there can be up to three weeks difference between the earliest plots of the Herrenweg and the Clos Windsbuhl.
This explains the aromatic quality of the Clos' wines and their constant balance in acidity, a guarantee of good ageing. Often harvested late, the Windsbuhl grapes rarely botrytise, no doubt due to the altitude, but they often reach high levels of ripeness.
Today, the Clos has a surface area of 5.5ha. The Pinot-Gris is in the majority, followed by Gewurztraminer and Riesling.
Tasting notes: A harmonious version, with a lovely note of cherry blossom mingling with aromas of ripe pear, flaked almond, lemon parfait and clover honey. A well-knit style that shows the spicy finish well.
Index: Sweetness level on the palate. Scale of 1 to 5.
1: Technically dry or tasting dry. 2: Not technically dry, but the sugars are not obviously apparent on the palate. Some tasters may find a slight roundness on the finish. These wines will taste dry with some bottle age.3: Medium sweetness, more important in the youth of the wine, which will gradually fade with age. 4 : Sweet wine. 5 : Sweet wine, very close to a Vendange Tardive
Attention: The bottles of Alsace wine do not fit into the wooden boxes sold separately.
