Saint-Joseph, great wines at the best price | Valley of the Rhône

What are the particularities of Saint-Joseph wines?

Saint-Joseph is an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée wine of the northern Rhône which extends over nearly 60Km along the river, between Condrieu and Cornas. Initially, it was only a group of 6 communes north of Cornas but the 1994 restructuring now includes 26 communes. The surface area of Saint-Joseph is 1231 hectares of vines and the total production is about 50,000 hectolitres. The terroir in the south of the appellation is made up of granite and marl soils, similar to those of Cornas and benefits from a more Mediterranean climate. The northern terroir is made up of soft Gneiss, on the hillsides but also many parts on the plains, and benefits from a more continental climate. Nearly 90% of St Joseph wines are red, made from the Syrah grape variety. However, an addition of 10% of white grape variety (Rousanne, Marsanne), in the production of red St Joseph, is authorized. The wines have notes of blackcurrant, cooked fruits and spices. They are often well-balanced and have a very good price/quality ratio. The white wines of St Joseph are produced only from Marsanne and Rousanne grapes. They are round and fat, even spicy for the wines grown in the undergrowth.
